Choosing a Minimal Extensions Set

Selecting which extensions you need when running OSBooster is a balance between deciding what facilities you need and how fast your Macintosh can run.

Some extensions and control panels can actually make your Macintosh run faster. Most make it run more slowly. All, presumably, offer some feature that you sometimes need.

The first decision you need to make is: What facilities do I need when I'm running OSBooster. If you only ever use OSBooster with one application, this is a little easier.

Do you need networking ? If not, you can safely turn off AppleShare, AppleTalk, OpenTransport, TCP/IP, Remote Access and other networking files.

Do you need the Control Strip ? Probably not, it slows down the Macintosh, turn it off.

Norton Utilities in particular has a very significant effect on performance. We strongly recommend turning it (and any similar utilites) off in the OSBooster extensions set.

In this section, we go through the typical contents of your extensions and control panels folders giving advice as to what facilities the extensions provide and whether you need them.

This description is based on the most common contents of the MacOS8.5 System folder and a few other common extensions and control panels. It would be impossible to cover every extension ever created, and we don't attempt to. Please see your third party documentation for help with other extensions.
